What is an “H&I”?

“H&I” is the shorthand reference to the Hospitals and Institutions Subcommittee of the Narcotics Anonymous’ Area of Hope organization in Saint Paul MN. H&I is a collection of recovering addicts who band together and take meetings/presentations into hospitals, prisons, detox centers, treatment programs, and similar places. The purpose of an H&I meeting is to carry the NA message of recovery to these places because addicts there do not have full access to regular NA meetings. H&I meetings/presentations, except for those in longer-term facilities, are intended to simply introduce those attending to some of the basics of the NA program. NA members from the outside should attend H&I meetings only when invited by the panel leader. The only people who attend are the panel leader and the panel members/speakers, or even those with as little as three months clean who observe the proceedings.
